Note that Free TAFE funding is not available for non-Auslan streams of the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Interpreting. You may be able to get Skills First funding to cover non-Auslan streams.

Do you speak more than one language? Do you want to help others to overcome language barriers? This course will train you to interpret from a source language to a target language.

This training will help you develop the skills to conduct transactions, interactions and negotiations as an interpreter. You will learn to interpret in general conversation settings.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • oral communication in a language other than English
  • ethical standards and practice in interpreting
  • using subject area terminology in interpreting
  • preparing to translate and interpret.

You can also choose electives in areas that interest you, for example:

  • working with diversity
  • using legal, education or health terminology in interpreting
  • building client relationships and business networks.

Note that the availability of electives may vary depending on your selected training provider.

On completion of this training, you will be qualified to work as an interpreter in various sectors such as:

  • health
  • welfare and community services
  • education
  • tourism.

You will be able to provide interpreter services in:

  • initial police interviews
  • over the counter interviews in customer and community information services
  • non-complex disability assistance
  • other informal business and workplace interactions.

This qualification is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
