About this course
Do you want to learn to communicate with Deaf and hard of hearing people? This training will teach you the basics of communicating in Auslan, as well as the history and culture of the Australian Deaf community.
You will develop the knowledge and skills to:
- understand sentences and frequently used expressions
- communicate about simple and routine tasks.
You will learn to:
- converse in Auslan at a basic user level
- compare the differences between the structure of Auslan and English
- source information on Deaf culture
- communicate according to Deaf protocol.
On completion of this training you will be able to hold simple social conversations in Auslan. You may choose to complete further training including a Certificate III in Auslan.

- Diploma of Auslan
- Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan)
- Advanced Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan).
You may be eligible to get Free TAFE funding to help cover the cost of each course.
Note that Free TAFE funding is not available for non-Auslan streams of the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Interpreting. You may be able to get Skills First funding to cover non-Auslan streams.
This qualification is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
