About this course
Would you like to start a career in health intervention and promotion, with a focus on drug and alcohol issues? This course will prepare you to provide services to individual clients and communities. You will qualify for entry level work under the guidance of other practitioners.
Core skills covered in the course include:
- assessing client needs
- providing interventions
- developing treatment plans
- building client relationships
- working with other health service providers
- first aid
- legal and ethical practices.
People with this qualification work in a range of settings:
- community organisations
- withdrawal services
- residential rehabilitation services
- outreach services.
This qualification is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

This course can be done as a traineeship. You’ll get technical knowledge through coursework and hands-on experience through paid work. On completion you will receive a nationally recognised qualification.
To enrol as a trainee, you’ll need:
- a job in a relevant workplace in the same field as your course, and
- an employer willing to sign a Commonwealth Government ‘Training Contract’ and support your learning at work.
