About this course

If you’d like a career in emergency health care, this course is a great entry point. It will give you the clinical skills and knowledge to build a strong foundation in this fast growing industry.

The training will help you build the confidence to work and communicate within the health care system. You will learn: 

  • how to provide non-emergency transport and care for patients with non-acute or chronic illness, and patients with disability
  • clinical assessment and care skills
  • pre-hospital and out-of-hospital interventions
  • advanced life support skills
  • infection prevention and control procedures
  • how to work safely in the health care system.

You can also choose electives in areas that interest you, for example:

  • transporting emergency patients
  • promoting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety
  • responding to behaviours of concern
  • interpreting and applying medical terminology
  • managing major incidents.

Note that availability of electives may vary depending on your selected training provider.

To give you practical experience, you will need to do 160 hours of work placement as part of the course.

On completion of the course, you will be able to work in the health care and patient-transport industry in roles such as:

  • ambulance transport attendant
  • patient transport officer
  • ambulance community officer.

This qualification is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
