About this course

This course will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to become a stonemason. 

You will learn how to work with sandstone, limestone, marble, and other types of stone and stone products to create: 

  • stone monuments 
  • buildings (heritage and new) 
  • building components like walls, floors, arches, chimneys, stairs, windows, decorative mouldings, fireplaces and benchtops.

You will be able to choose elective subjects in one of these areas: 

  • architectural heritage, conservation, and restoration stonemasonry
  • new and contemporary stonemasonry
  • monumental stonemasonry
  • bench tops. 

Note that the availability of electives may vary depending on your selected training provider.

On completion of the course, you will be able to do an apprenticeship in one of the following occupations: 

  • architectural stonemason
  • monumental stonemason
  • heritage stonemason
  • finisher
  • bench top mason
  • stonemason.

This qualification is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Licensing and regulatory information

To work in the construction industry, you’ll need to do the induction program ‘Code of Practice: Construction Work’. You‘ll cover this in the unit ‘CONISS012 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry’.
