About this course

Are you interested in the technical side of working on vessels? This course will teach you how to keep marine engines and onboard systems working safely and smoothly. You will get hands-on experience maintaining and monitoring the vessel’s engines and machinery.

You will learn how to:

solve problems
carry out essential maintenance tasks
support the safe operation of commercial vessels.

The course also covers how to:

operate and monitor marine engines and propulsion systems
carry out routine maintenance and servicing tasks
identify and respond to mechanical faults
maintain fuel, cooling and electrical systems
follow safety procedures and environmental requirements
use engineering tools and equipment correctly
respond to onboard emergencies and equipment failures
record maintenance activities and operational information.

After completing this course, you may be ready to work as a:

marine engine driver (Grade 2 Near Coastal)
engine room crew member
marine engineering assistant
commercial vessel crew member
marine maintenance worker.

You could find employment on:

Licensing and regulatory information

This course will prepare you to apply for your Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal licence through Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

This course can be done as a traineeship. You’ll get technical knowledge through coursework and hands-on experience through paid work. On completion you will receive a nationally recognised qualification.
To enrol as a trainee, you’ll need:
1. a job in a relevant workplace in the same field as your course, and
2. an employer willing to sign a Commonwealth Government ‘Training Contract’ and support your learning at work.
