If you enjoy being on the water and want to build a career in the maritime industry, this course can help you take the next step. You’ll develop the practical skills to operate commercial vessels up to 24 metres in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
This course will teach you how to operate commercial vessels safely and confidently. You’ll build practical skills through hands-on training, and you’ll learn how to apply them in real maritime workplaces.
You will learn how to:
- navigate using charts, GPS and compasses
- plan trips and understand tides, currents and weather
- handle and manoeuvre vessels in different conditions
- manage crew and keep passengers safe
- use marine radios and follow communication rules
- respond to emergencies like fires or person-overboard situations
- follow maritime laws and safety procedures.
The training involves:
- steering
- docking
- anchoring
- record keeping
- checking safety gear
- running daily operations.
After completing this course, you may be ready to work:
- as a crew member
- in maritime operations
- at a marina.
Licensing and regulatory information
This course will prepare you to apply for your Master less than 24 metres near coastal licence through Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). You will have the skills needed to work as a master on commercial vessels up to 24 metres long, within 200 nautical miles of the coast.
