About this course

Do you enjoy working with animals? Would you like to work in an animal care facility or service?

This training will give you the skills and knowledge to work with animals in a professional setting. You will learn to handle and care for animals including cats, dogs, birds, mammals, reptiles and native wildlife.

Some of the skills and knowledge you will learn includes:

  • identifying animal behaviours
  • interacting safely with animals
  • assessing animal welfare
  • providing basic animal first aid
  • complying with infection control policies and procedures in animal care work
  • communicating effectively with clients and team members.

You can choose to specialise in animal care, pet grooming or customer service.

You can also choose electives that interest you, for example:

  • caring for young animals
  • maintaining aquariums
  • grooming dogs
  • producing visual merchandise.

On completion of this training you could get a job in a variety of settings including animal welfare shelters, local government animal services, pet retail, boarding or breeding facilities, pet grooming and other animal services.

You could work in various roles such as:

  • pet shop worker
  • pet groomer
  • kennel or cattery attendant
  • pet exerciser
  • wildlife carer
  • animal care receptionist
  • aquarium assistant.
