About this course

Working with plants can be very rewarding. Jobs in the horticulture sector are expected to grow. 

In this training you will learn core horticulture knowledge and skills including how to:

  • recognise plants
  • treat weeds
  • treat plant pests, diseases and disorders
  • assist with soil sampling and testing
  • participate in environmentally sustainable work practices
  • operate basic machinery and equipment.

You can also choose from a wide selection of electives in areas that interest you, for example:

  • pruning
  • stump grinding
  • irrigation
  • landscape construction
  • paving
  • operating chainsaws
  • indoor plants
  • turf construction and establishment
  • tree felling 
  • point-of-sale procedures.

After completing this course, you could work as an assistant gardener, garden labourer, horticulture worker, landscape assistant or nursery assistant.

You could also choose to do a horticulture apprenticeship or traineeship, or go onto further study in this area.

This qualification is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
