Earn and learn in entry-level roles

Apprenticeships and traineeships give young people practical, transferable skills, workforce experience and the foundation for a solid career. And they’re paid positions, so your child will earn as they learn.

If your child is still at school, it’s worth remembering that young people can start an apprenticeship or traineeship while at school completing VCE or VCAL. Talk to the careers adviser or year level coordinator at your child’s school for more information.

The difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship

Both apprenticeships and traineeships involve a training contract between employer and employee and formal and on-the-job training to learn a trade or occupation. Both deliver a nationally recognised qualification upon completion.

An apprenticeship is usually longer than a traineeship and there are differences in the type of contract you enter into. For an apprenticeship, once an initial probationary period is complete, both the apprentice and employer must agree to any changes to the training contract. Under a traineeship, either party may cancel the contract.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs)

If your child is enrolled in VCE or VCAL, an SBAT can offer them the opportunity to combine school with part-time employment and Vocational Education and Training (VET). An SBAT becomes part of their senior secondary school program and their school study timetable.

A number of people are involved in arranging an SBAT, including the child, the parents, the employer, the RTO, the school and an Australian Apprenticeship Centre.

SBATs require approximately two days a week consisting of both training and employment, contribute towards your child’s VCE or VCAL, lead to a nationally recognised qualification and include paid work.

Skills in demand

Apprenticeships and traineeships are available in a wide and fast-growing range of industries. Most people are familiar with apprenticeships in the building and construction or food industries, but may not know that there are apprenticeship opportunities in the telecommunications or information technology industries.

As you and your child think about an apprenticeship or traineeship it’s worth considering which industries are likely to have good employment prospects in the future, and what kinds of skills will be in demand.
