How do I become a Signwriter in Victoria?
To work as a Signwriter in Victoria, you'll need:
- A Certificate III in Signage
- Completed apprenticeship
Recommended - Completion of Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or equivalent
- Strong understanding of Mathematics and English
- Construction Induction Card (aka White Card) is required for access to any construction site in Australia
What does a Signwriter do?
- Confers with clients and responds to proposals, sketches and written instructions to determine composition of signs
- Designs and creates signs and graphics using computer software and signmaking machines
- Designs and creates signs by measuring and calculating letter size, preparing the surface, applying background paint using brushes, sprays and rollers, and creating the letters using brushes, stencils, enamel paint and decals
- Designs and creates wall murals, screen prints, gold leaf work and custom vehicle art
- Paints signs and lettering using lacquers, varnishes, paints and other materials
- Paints signs on brick, metal, timber, glass, plastic and other surfaces
- Makes and erects three dimensional signs
- Prepares cost estimates for labour and materials
- May erect and work on scaffolding
