Help & advice

Rebecca Barry in the Moe Neighbourhood Centre foyer

Take the first step

“I never thought I would attempt it let alone achieve it,” says single mother Rebecca Barry.

Rebecca left school in Year 10 and three years later, at 19, had a son to take care of. When he was old enough for her to look for work, she hardly knew where to begin because she had no qualifications.

Today, Rebecca not only has her VCE, she has a Certificate IV and a Diploma of Community Services Work and is now doing a Bachelor of Community Work and Counselling at Monash University.

Rebecca got started by doing a computer course at Moe Neighborhood Centre, her nearest Learn Local organisation. That gave her the confidence to go on and do her VCE at Yallourn GippsTAFE.

“The teachers at both places were fantastic; they gave me the encouragement and confidence to go even further.”

There was no stopping Rebecca after that and now she can’t wait to be a full time community worker and help others when she finishes her degree at Monash University.

She has a message to anyone who is nervous about doing a course:

“Whatever it is you want to do, take the first step. There will be people to help you along the way and it will be life-changing.”
