AUDIO: My name’s Mark. I’ve over the last two years had training through Ballarat Health Services as a trainee nurse. And then I’ve started work here in the operating suite as a medication endorsed enrolled nurse.

AUDIO: The enrolled nurse course was a real benefit for us as students. The practical hands-on experience that we received over two years – I don’t think you can replicate that in a university environment. And I think for me; being a late starter, that hands-on experience certainly did help me.

AUDIO: Some of the tasks that are involved for myself is first thing in the morning we set up our surgery list …

AUDIO: So we have our trolleys that are stacked with the equipment and the instruments. We then unpack the trolleys and set up for theatre. One of the favourite things is the diversity that you have. I’m in the operating suite and every day I’m seeing something new; a new procedure that I’m learning and picking up skills on. To improve my scope of practice as a nurse.

AUDIO: My favourite task of the day is scrubbing in to assist a surgeon and operation and to really get in there and get your hands dirty, so to speak.

AUDIO: Day-to-day skills that you need would be your observation skills on your patients. You have to have a little bit of get up and go.

VIDEO: Mark Smith performing numerous tasks as a nurse including unpacking instruments and monitoring machinery.

AUDIO: It’s very quick-paced at times. You have to be somebody that will put their hand up and ask a question on ‘why’. And you’re always learning.

AUDIO: If you’re thinking of becoming a nurse, I think it’s something that’s very rewarding. You can leave work at the end of the day knowing that you’ve helped somebody, y’know, at their time of need. And I think that’s really rewarding. If you have that nurturing side in you, in your personality, it would certainly be a rewarding position.
