Goldfields Ambassador
Introducing Ken McCulloch
Lifelong learning is critical in building and running a successful business, according to Goldfields Regional Ambassador Ken McCulloch. As new technologies emerge and ways of working change, he believes continued staff development and learning new skills is essential for the business to maintain its competitive advantage.
McCullochs was started in 1945 by Ken’s grandfather William and his father Ron McCulloch, as a business working in the agricultural industry. The family business has diversified and now also serves the earthmoving, construction and mining industries. They now manufacture drilling rigs for mineral exploration, as well as providing and servicing hydraulic equipment and machinery across Australia.
The business, which has grown from a staff of four in 1971 to over 45, has largely been able to diversify and expand its services because of its investment in training and retaining skilled staff.
Ken is a great advocate for having a pool of skilled tradespeople in the community, with McCullochs currently employing five full-time apprentices and three school-based apprentices. Ken believes that it doesn’t matter where tradespeople learn their skills in the long run, as every business benefits from the pool available as businesses grow.
