Job a Dream Catch
Anthony Alexander couldn’t think of a place he’d rather be than on the ocean and he has created the perfect life for it through marine industry training.
“I’ve always loved working on the water,” he says. “It takes me away from any worries; there are no hassles.”
As a result of study and intense, dedicated training, Anthony has furthered his fishing aspirations and now has his dream job, working on Lakes Entrance trawler, the Wellington Cape.
In 2009, Anthony gained a Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Marine Engine Driving – Grade 3) and a Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations – Master Class 5) at the South East Australian Maritime Education Centre (SEAMEC) in Lakes Entrance.
“I had seven years experience in the marine industry before I applied for the course, he says.
Doing the training and study meant that Anthony missed out on work and he had to be deeply focused on the course work required to receive his Certificates. However, Anthony says, “Completing the courses has created a lot more job opportunities.” His extra qualifications also mean a higher income – “which is nice,” he says.
Anthony was also pleased that he was able to study in Lakes Entrance and stay where he wants to be - on the water. Anthony hopes to study again in the future, but is satisfied with where his job has taken him at the moment.
“I will study again,” he says. “I want to open up more opportunities, but that is a while off yet.”
