Hands-on Training Key to Employment

handson_trainingCompleting a TAFE course opened many doors for Tamara Frew, giving her the opportunity to pursue a career in disability services.

After completing secondary school Tamara went to TAFE and did a Certificate IV in Disability Work. She has a personal interest in this industry as she has muscular dystrophy herself.

As a result of her TAFE course, Tamara secured a job in disability services with the Department of Human Services.

"I love my job - it gives me the opportunity to help people. TAFE led me directly to a career I love and find very rewarding," says Tamara.

Tamara appreciated the hands on practical style of TAFE as it gave her a good appreciation for what working in disability would be like. And she says it was a small investment for a very big return.

"TAFE gives you a feel for what it is like in the workplace. The lecturers really focus on the practical aspects, teaching you what they have experienced in their own working career."

Tamara believes that TAFE provides a good launching place to start a career.

"There are lots of opportunities for people to find employment with a certificate qualification. And many people find employment through the work experience they do during TAFE," she says.

Tamara is continuing to upgrade her skills while working in the industry, now undertaking a Diploma of Community Welfare.
