Lucinda Brundell has always been a creative and handy sort of person, with an eye for detail and a hands on approach. When she decided to complete a Certificate III in General Construction (Painting and Decorating) as part of her apprenticeship with her father’s business she had no idea what opportunities it would lead to.
Lucinda thrived in the trade school environment, mentoring fellow students while completing the formal studies for her apprenticeship in half the allocated time.
Her enthusiasm for skills training and her natural talent has netted Lucinda industry scholarships and awards from organisations such as the Master Builders Association and the National Association of Women in Construction. Lucinda was also named Victorian Apprentice of the Year in 2008.
Lucinda is now lucky enough to not only work in her chosen field, but also inspire others through teaching pre-apprenticeship courses in painting and decorating.
Lucinda believes that vocational education and training builds solid skills and sound career paths.
"Skills training is so important because it gives people the chance to develop and refine their abilities. Victoria needs good trained people, and there is always going to be a need for skilled people in the building and construction industry," she says.
Lucinda says she is proud to work in construction and hopes to mentor other women looking to choose a trade as a career.
