Course Completes Career Change for Camp Worker
Simon Milligan found that a complete career change was easier than he ever imagined by training at TAFE.Working as a venue manager at a number of Melbourne nightclubs, Simon didn't feel he was contributing to the community.
While trying to work out what to do with his career, Simon did some volunteer work and had his first experience of working with children. This opened his eyes to a possible new career path and Simon started looking into training options.
He started a Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation at TAFE and found a job at a school camp in Portsea.
Simon can’t believe how simple it was to pursue a completely different career through TAFE. He was able to start studying and work in a new industry all within a few months. And the hands on nature of TAFE really appealed to Simon.
"It was a very practical course with lecturers who are in the industry. Every class I was learning real practical skills," he says.
Through the contacts he made during TAFE, Simon found his current job as an outdoor education specialist teaching students on adventure-based outdoor experiential learning courses.
Simon's goal now is to keep upgrading his skills. Next on his agenda is to complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which will give him options to expand his career further with adult audiences.
