Skills Shortages

In mid 2009, Skills Victoria determined which industries and occupations were likely to experience skill shortages in the near future.

This list was compiled through industry consultation, economic forecasts and other information about economic drivers and their impact on skill demand and supply.

This list will be updated in late 2011.

Agrifood services industry

Agricultural professionals and skilled agricultural workers including:

  • Agricultural scientists and advisors
  • Farm managers and overseers
  • Skilled Agricultural workers

Food processing workers particularly with higher level qualifications in the fields of:

  • Food science
  • Frontline management
  • Lean production

Hospitality related food managers and tradespersons including:

  • Chefs
  • Bakers
  • Pastry cooks

Building and construction industry

Building and engineering professionals and associate professionals including:

  • Engineering and production managers
  • Civil, electrical, mechanical and production engineers
  • Civil, electrical, mechanical engineers associates
  • Building and architectural associates

Construction tradespersons including:

  • Roof slaters and tilers
  • Floor finishers
  • Carpenters
  • Plumbers
  • Gasfitters
  • Roof plumbers
  • Plasterers
  • Painters

Electricity, gas and water industry

Electrical and electronics tradespersons including:

  • General electricians
  • Air-conditioning mechanics
  • Electronic equipment tradespersons

Health and community services industry

Nursing and health professionals and associate professionals, carers and aids including:

  • Nurse managers and educators
  • Registered nurses, midwifes and mental health nurses
  • Enrolled nurses and nursing assistants
  • Dental technicians
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physiotherapists

Social welfare professionals and associate professionals including:

  • Welfare and community workers and counsellors

Transport and storage industry

Transport workers including:

  • Transport managers, administrators and clerks; with high level logistics and supply chain management skills
