Parents join learning journey

UYCH Community CollegeParents Program UYCH

Upper Yarra Community House (UYCH Community College) has grabbed hold of new technology and learning formats to establish a program that engages parents in both their own education, as well as their children’s.

UYCH Community College developed their program ‘New2me’ as a way to connect with the parents and guardians of students currently completed year 12 at UYCH Community College. The aim is to eliminate their barriers towards education, so they don’t get passed onto their children.

The structure of the program lets learners suggest the topics they wish to explore, which has helped keep them interested.
As the name suggests, the program introduces adult learners to technologies that are new to them, including the Nintendo DS and brain training software. This has allowed even the shyest of participants to engage in classroom discussions by sending their questions through electronically.

The program has also established pathways to further education and its success is clear. All participants are now exploring options of going on to further education and are actively participating in their children’s education.
