Choosing what to learn, where and how
Studying at a Learn Local organisation offers the convenience of education and training just around the corner. You can get confidence and skills, which can lead to more study or training, a job, or both. You can learn:
- in a local centre
- in a friendly environment
- with people who are focused on what you need
- online (with some Learn Local organisations)
What’s on offer?
There are around 320 community-based organisations, called Learn Local organisations in Victoria. They offer a range of courses including:- courses to help you start work, go back to work, change jobs or keep your job
- courses that provide you with nationally recognised vocational qualifications
- courses to help you get back into learning
- courses for your own interest and personal development.
Types of courses
Learn Local organisations offer lots of different courses, to suit all kinds of people.
| English classes – reading and writing if English is your second language (ESL) | |
| Literacy and numeracy – to improve your reading and writing skills for daily life | |
| Employment – to help you find a job | |
| Finish Year 12 – Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) programs for people not at school | |
| Qualifications – courses that lead to qualifications for a specific job, such as hospitality or aged care | |
| Introductory Courses - courses to prepare for future accredited study and/or build skills for the workplace |
People
Learn Local is for everyone! People who study at Learn Local organisations are of all ages and backgrounds, but some organisations offer specialist support for people who have particular learning needs, such as:
| Disability - for adults with special needs |
|
| Youth - for adults 15-24 years old, especially those disengaged from school | |
| Multicultural - support for many ethnic groups and multicultural programs |
|
| Indigenous - for Indigenous learners |
It’s especially helpful if you’ve never studied before or studied before but had a poor experience.

How to enrol
When you are enrolling you may be asked to provide proof of your identity. You may need to enrol a week or two before your course is due to start. If you do not enrol with your provider at the right time it may mean that you cannot start your course or that your start is delayed. Go to the How to enrol page for more information.
Other services
Learn Local organisations also offer other services to help you learn. Ask about childcare facilities, career advice or disability support services. You may also be able to access a concession or assistance to help pay course fees. For more information go to the Financial assistance page.
