Victorian Small Business of the Year

Sweeney Todd Waste Disposal

SweeneyToddSweeney Todd Waste Disposal won the 2008 Victorian Small Business of the Year Award.

Lara-based Sweeney Todd Waste Disposal has built a strong relationship with the Gordon Institute of TAFE to deliver targeted training for its staff.

By combining formal VET training with extensive on-the-job training the business has established itself as an environmentally-friendly market leader in the specialised field of medical waste management. Through dedicated training, workers are aware of the safety aspect to the business as well as company procedures regarding medical waste management. Job rotation assists in staff becoming multi-skilled across the business and increases knowledge of the industry.

The company also provides training sessions on appropriate disposal procedures and conducts Clinical Waste Audits for external waste producers. This assists in improved safety and appropriate waste segregation across their client base.

Hugh Parsons, Senior Management Consultant for Sweeney Todd Waste disposals understands the value of training for the business and for the individual.

“Education costs…lack of education costs more!” he said.

“The benefits of the Award revolve around the success we have achieved. There is a definite ‘feel good’ factor around the business and the recognition of our achievement has lifted significantly our performance and our company profile.”

“The careers of two of our drivers has changed dramatically with them being promoted through to management. This could only have been achieved through our education program.”

Sweeney Todd Waste Disposal went on to represent the State as one of only three finalists in the 2008 Australian Training Awards.
