Victorian Apprentice of the Year
Lucinda Hems/Brundell
Ballarat apprentice Lucinda Brundell won the 2008 Victorian Apprentice of the Year Award. Lucinda completed a Certificate III in General Construction (Painting and Decorating), at the University of Ballarat (TAFE Portfolio), as part of her apprenticeship with her father’s business, J.L. & P.H. Hems.Lucinda thrived in the trade school environment, mentoring fellow students while completing the formal studies for her apprenticeship in half the allocated time. Since her win at the Victorian Training Awards, Lucinda now teaches in her chosen field.
“The benefits for me personally are that I have been asked to teach at the University of Ballarat (TAFE Portfolio) in the Pre-apprenticeships course in Painting and Decorating,” said Lucinda.
“Skills training is important because it gives people the chance to refine their skills and abilities. Victoria needs good, trained people as we will always have a need for them in the building and construction industry.”
Lucinda has won industry scholarships and awards from organisations including the Master Builders Association, the National Association of Women in Construction and Incolink. She is proud to work in construction and hopes to mentor other women looking to choose a trade as a career.
