Victorian VET in Schools Excellence Award
Inner Melbourne VET Cluster Inc.
The Inner Melbourne VET Cluster is a unique partnership of State, Catholic and Independent schools in inner Melbourne. Established to expand vocational pathway opportunities for students in postcompulsory years, the cluster’s unique Host School Model gives schools with limited senior secondary curriculum offerings, an opportunity to provide an extensive vocational program.

Centre of Excellence for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE
Headed by Libby Hughes and coordinated by Cathy Clark, the team at the Centre for Excellence for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing enhances the participation of deaf students in TAFEs across the state. It develops programs suitable for the learning needs of deaf and hard of hearing students and assists the vocational education and training sector in providing inclusive and accessible learning environments.

Victorian Training Initiative of the Year Award
Centre of Excellence for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE
Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE’s Centre of Excellence for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing is unique in delivering the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment with Auslan – Australian Sign Language – as the primary language in the classroom. The training targets deaf learners using distinctive learning strategies, while maintaining the qualification’s standards.

Crown Melbourne Limited
Crown Melbourne Limited currently has over 1200 employees undertaking nationally accredited training qualifications. These include Certificates in hospitality, security operations and frontline management. Crown is an enterprise based training organisation with all of its training customised for its unique workplace.

Victorian Large Training Provider of the Year Award
Gordon Institute of TAFE
The Gordon is Victoria’s largest regional training provider. In 2009, more than 23,000 enrolments were accepted, with over 17,800 students studying on campus, off campus and in industry. Gordon Institute’s provision of workplace-based training ranges from optical technology training for Specsavers and bio-containment training for CSIRO, to asset maintenance training in Abu Dhabi.

Victorian Small Training Provider of the Year Award
Spectrum Education and Training
Spectrum Education and Training provides a wide range of services to newly arrived and established migrant communities in Melbourne’s north-west. Working in an area of high unemployment, SET has actively fostered local service partnerships and created innovative skills development programs. These include a social enterprise program providing multicultural home care for retrenched migrants undertaking traineeships.
Victorian Small Business of the Year Award
The Social Studio
The Social Studio in Collingwood is part fashion workshop, part retail outlet and part café. This social enterprise currently provides training and employment in clothing production, customer service and hospitality for around 30 young new Australians of refugee background. It also provides social support and aims to empower its workers to achieve their dreams through social enterprise.

Victorian Teacher/Trainer of the Year Award
Ken Radley
South West Institute of TAFE
Ken currently teaches Health and Human Development and Outdoor and Environment Studies across various levels, including special needs students and youth programs at the Centre for Education and Early Childhood Development at South West Institute of TAFE. He is passionate about developing programs that provide meaningful pathways to further education and training, whilst embracing and understanding the many issues and barriers to engagement.

Victorian Koorie Student of the Year Award
Rory Smeaton
Swinburne University of Technology
(TAFE Division)
Rory, an Indigenous Liaison Officer at Kangan Institute successfully completed a Diploma of Youth Work in 2009 with Swinburne University of TAFE. He has been employed since 2005 by the Football Federation and AFL Sportsready as a youth worker. His career goal is to provide pathways to employment, education and community participation for indigenous youth.

Imran Khan
Air Conditioning and Mechanical
Contractors’ Association of Victoria
Imran completed his Certificate IV in Drafting – Air Conditioning and Mechanical Services – in record time, during his traineeship as Drawing Office Manager with heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractors, AE Smith and Son. His leadership potential and dedication to high achievement have been recognised in a number of industry and company awards.

Vocational Student of the Year Award
Michael Hogan
Holmesglen Institute of TAFE
After completing his Certificate I and II in Automotive Electrical Technology with Holmesglen TAFE, Michael now teaches there and operates his own auto electric business. He won the Institute’s Student Excellence Award for his Certificate II. Michael is also a Lieutenant in the CFA, having completed a Certificate IV in Fire Technology at Swinburne TAFE.

Victorian School-Based Apprentice of the Year Award
Rhylee Deas
Wodonga Institute of TAFE and Rutherglen
High School
Rhylee approached Australian Industry Group Training to do a Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication school-based apprenticeship. Now in Year 12, he is hosted to J.C. Butko Engineering. He has received recognition for his studies at Riverina Institute of TAFE and hopes to gain a full-time apprenticeship in boilermaking at the end of the year. Rhylee received the The Emma George Junior Sporting Scholarship at the Australia Day Awards in 2009, acknowledging his rowing accomplishments at both a national and local level.

Victorian Apprentice of the Year Award
Callan Ridge
Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE
Callan was awarded top apprentice in his field at Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE, in both 1st and 2nd year. Now in the third year of his Engineering Mechanical Apprenticeship, employed by AIGTS and hosted to W McCulloch Hydraulic Engineers, Callan has undertaken a variety of training extras such as completing accredited modules in Computer Aided Design towards his Diploma in Engineering to broaden his career options.

Victorian Skills For Sustainability Award
Swinburne University of Technology (TAFE Division)
Since 2001, Swinburne University of Technology’s National Centre for Sustainability has developed a range of innovative training programs from foundation level through to their Diploma and Graduate Certificate of Sustainability. Swinburne has a university-wide Sustainability Strategy, which includes a commitment that by 2015, 100% of programs will have sustainability embedded in the learning objectives.
