What Do I Need to Know?

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for their award category. To check if you are eligible, visit your award category at the awards categories page.

Conditions of entry

By entering the 2009 Victorian Training Awards, all applicants must agree to abide by the conditions of entry found on this site.

What happens to my application?

When your application has been received and processed you will be sent notification acknowledging the receipt of your application. If your application is received after the deadline time and date (Friday 15 May 2009 at 5pm) then your notification will indicate that your application is ineligible. After this initial notification, only those nominees judged to be finalists will be contacted again by Skills Victoria or their representative.

All applications are judged according to how well they meet the Award criteria. Applications are considered by Judging Panels comprised of individuals with extensive experience in the training and industry sectors.

The judging process is different for the student categories compared to the organisational categories.

For students

  • For all student award categories, (with the exception of the Victorian Koorie Student of the Year Award), Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs) are responsible for the first stage of the judging process. ITABs assess, score and rank all nominations within their industry area against the assessment criteria. Selected applications are forwarded to the Judging Panel for the next stage of the process.
  • The Judging Panel for each category assesses the applications and selects four nominees as the finalists. The Judging Panel interviews each of the four nominees and their nominators. Upon completion of the interviews, Judging Panel members assess each nominee according to the criteria, taking into consideration their application, the score and comments from the ITAB panel and their interview. The Judging Panel then meets to discuss the merits of each finalist and reach a consensus on who should be the winner of the category.
  • All Victorian Koorie Student of the Year nominations are sent to the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc (VAEAI). VAEAI selects the four finalists who are then interviewed by a cross-industry Judging Panel who then selects the winner.

For organisational categories

In the non-student categories, there is only one Judging Panel for each category that considers all nominations based upon the criteria and selects three finalists who are then interviewed. The Judging Panel then selects one of these finalists as the winner, taking into consideration their application and interview to identify the best in the category. The Judging Panels may undertake site visits if required.

What happens if I'm a finalist?

If chosen, you will be notified by Skills Victoria or their representative upon becoming a finalist. You may also be required to attend interviews in Melbourne during June/July 2009.

Judging panels may decide at their discretion to conduct site visits at your training location for the following categories:

  • Victorian Teacher/Trainer of the Year Award
  • Victorian VET Client Service/Support Excellence Award
  • Victorian Large Training Provider of the Year Award
  • Victorian Small Training Provider of the Year Award
  • Victorian Training Initiative of the Year Award
  • Victorian VET in Schools Excellence Award
  • Victorian Employer of the Year Award
  • Victorian Small Business of the Year Award

As a finalist, you will need to be available for a photographer or film crew to visit and take photos or video footage for the audio-visual displays at the presentation ceremony.

The Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development media unit may contact you for further information about your training, to be included in Victorian Government media releases and publicity.  You may also be interviewed by the media for news stories.

As a finalist, you will be required to attend the 2009 Victorian Training Awards Presentation Dinner, as presence on stage for the announcement of the winner is mandatory.

All finalists receive a framed certificate signed by the Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation.
Student finalists who do not go on to win their category receive a cheque for $500.

What happens if I’m a winner?

  • Winners will be announced on stage at the Victorian Training Awards Presentation Ceremony, which will be held at the Crown Palladium on Thursday, 20 August 2009.
  • Winners of all categories (except for the Victorian Large Training Provider of the Year Award, Victorian Small Training Provider of the Year Award and the Victorian Employer of the Year Award) receive a cheque for $10,000!
  • All winners receive a trophy to recognise their outstanding achievement.
  • Winners are recognised as the best in the state and are able to better position themselves within the vocational education and training sector.
  • Winners may be required by the DIIRD to participate in media events in the future as ambassadors of the vocational education and training sector.
  • All Victorian student winners will represent the State at the national Awards, the Australian Training Awards to be held in Canberra in November 2009. All Victorian winners in the organisational categories (with the exception of the Victorian VET Client Service/Support Excellence Award and the Victorian Teacher/Trainer of the Year Award, which are Victorian only Awards) will be assessed and may be chosen as one of three finalists for their category in the Australian Training Awards. An extra five pages addressing the criteria will be required for the Australian Training Awards entry from all Victorian student and organisational winners. Funding is provided for the State’s representatives to attend the national Awards. Attendance is required at the national Awards for the relevant state winners.
