The Galvatrons Rock Fairhills High School in the Name of Skills

Hayley_Tim_and_The_Galvatro Melbourne rock band, The Galvatrons, gave students at Fairhills High School a lunch hour to remember on Monday, 20 July 2009, when they pounded out their popular tunes in the school gym as part of the Nova Skill Set competition.

The Skill Set competition was part of an exciting four week long campaign on Nova, which aimed to inform young people of the wide range of TAFE and training courses which lead to diverse careers.

Fairhills High School Year 11 student, Nicole Conyers, won the competition by registering her school online. Along with having The Galvatrons entertain her fellow students, she also won a laptop to help with her future training and a day's work experience in her dream field.

Shaun Leane, MP, Member for the Eastern Metropolitan Region, spoke at the event and presented Nicole with her new laptop.

"TAFE is not just about becoming a tradie – it's a way you can gain the skills and qualifications to work in a huge range of jobs," Mr Leane said.

At the event, Jackie Clingan, winner of the 2007 Victorian Trainee of the Year award, shared her success story with VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) students.

Listeners to the Nova campaign were encouraged to visit www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/skills to find out more information about the great careers that TAFE and training can lead to.
