Gippsland Tertiary Education Plan
On 21 March 2011, the Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Peter Hall announced the establishment of an Expert Panel to develop a Gippsland Tertiary Education Plan. The review was chaired by Professor Kwong Lee Dow, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, who was joined on the panel by Dr Michele Allan and Mr John Mitchell.
The plan follows Skills Victoria’s 2009 report advising on the development of the Victorian Tertiary Education Plan which confirmed there was an appreciable gap in participation and attainment levels between large parts of Melbourne and regional Victoria.
On 14 December 2011, the Expert Panel presented Mr Hall with the 2011 Gippsland Tertiary Education Plan. The plan outlines the pertinent issues and factors affecting tertiary education access and attainment in Gippsland and makes 10 recommendations that together provide an ambitious agenda for tertiary education provision in the region.
“Gippsland faces unique challenges – including a combination of low school retention rates, ageing population, large distances and low vocational education participation rates,” Mr Hall said.
“The report that I asked for looks at finding ways to meet the key challenges in Gippsland to ensure the region continues to thrive into the future.”
A Government response to the plan will be released early 2012.
