Apprentice Trade Bonus Program
Who is eligible for the bonus?
If you commenced your apprenticeship on or after 1 January 2006, and are in a traditional trade apprenticeship as shown in the industry guides on this website, you are eligible for a bonus.
The bonus applies to apprentices who are employed full-time, part-time or as a school-based new apprentice as well as both new entrant and existing worker apprentices. Apprentices in the armed forces will not be eligible for payment.
How much will I get?
If eligible, you will receive two payments of $250 each. The first on reaching the six month point of the apprenticeship, and the second on reaching 12 months. You must have stayed in employment, under a training contract in one vocation for the full six or 12 month period.If you change vocation then the time calculation starts over again.

What about GST and tax?
There is no GST attached to the trade bonus payments. However the trade bonus payment is classed as taxable income and therefore needs to be included on your tax return.
How will I be paid?
You will receive payments in the form of vouchers, issued at the 6 month and 12 month points of the apprenticeship respectively. These are redeemable at any Australia Post outlet displaying the Bank@Post sign. The vouchers will be issued in your name and mailed to your employer. The vouchers will be redeemed on presentation of sufficient personal identification (a photo ID or birth certificate and payslip).
What if I don't get a payment?
If you believe that you are entitled to an Apprentice Trade Bonus payment, but have not received a voucher after you have completed 7 months of your apprenticeship, you can contact the Trade Bonus hotline on 1300 855 282.
Can I receive more than one set of bonus payments?
No. If you receive the bonus payments for one apprenticeship, and then drop-out and start another apprenticeship, you will not receive a second set of bonus payments under that program.
